Album Review: Planetshakers' #LetsGo

In the span of just less than two decades, Australia-based Planetshakers has literally shaken the planet with their music. Driven by the desire to empower generations to win generations, the very core of their ministry is to seek the presence of God, first and foremost. And as for their latest album, #LetsGo, they are making a response.

#LetsGo is the second album of the band for 2015 (it follows the successful Outback Worship Sessions which was released in May), and the 33rd in their growing discography.

I was present on the two-night concert of Planetshakers here in Manila last August, and within those nights, Planetshakers played two of the songs on this record. I can still recall Joth Hunt, their lead vocalist, saying Let’s Go is the response for what the “This Is Our Time” season has brought to Planetshakers and to the church as a whole. Indeed, #LetsGo should be the response of each Bible-believing, Christ-worshipping individual, for God has called us to be His hands and feet.

While the #LetsGo DVD has only eight videos on it plus a behind the scene footage, the CD is composed of 12 new songs, one new cover of an oldie (I Just Want You), an intro, and a prayer by Pastor Sam Evans, overall, 15 tracks. Like the other title cuts of Planetshakers’ past albums (This Is Our Time, Endless Praise, Nothing Is Impossible to name a few), #LetsGo has also gained prominence. Given the fact that they have played it in each city that they have visited early this year, I won’t be surprised if it might also reach the peak “Nothing Is Impossible” had reached. Its very youthful vibe is a charm. Plus, it is lyrically rich and powerful.

If there is one lesson that I’ve learned from Planetshakers through the years, that would be to be not reserved in worshipping Jesus—to be sold out and all out for Him. Truly, songs like “Nobody Like You,” “All About You,” and “New Era” reflect which. Each is an addition to their praise party song library; but if you prefer intimate worship songs rather than EDM infiltrated praise cuts, #LetsGo has also a plenty of it. “Home” is the first in line; its anthemic atmosphere compliments the message of the song which is obviously based on the parable of the prodigal son. While “Just One Touch” is musically intense, “Stepping In”, and “I Just Want You” are much simpler and gentle. My favorite track in the album is “Glorious Collision.” Sung by Natalie Ruiz, this poetic worship ballad brings out a lot of power and emotion. Its faith-stirring, heart-piercing, powerful message conveys how our God could turn our life around.

The thing that I love the most about this album is, it is so flavorful and diverse. “Born To Praise,” a Gospel-infused hip hop which I seldom hear from Planetshakers, is a good indicator that they are stretching out their tents. Though I think the first line of its verse is a little bit feminine (maybe written for their Women’s conference), the song as a whole is a celebration of the glorious destiny each one of us has in Christ; and all I can say is, I am looking forward to hearing some more of this genre on their future releases.

At the end of the day, Planetshakers’ #LetsGo did not disappoint. Though all of the songs are lyrically-brilliant, I hope they would dig down on this department just a little bit deeper. Instrumentally, each track is unique and stunning. Overall, this album is pretty incredible and seriously, really, absolutely, their best yet since This Is Our Time!

Planetshakers LIVE in MANILA [DAY 2] Journal + Concert Setlist

Hi guys! This is the continuation of my yesterday’s blog post which features my Planetshakers concert journal.

The second night of Planetshakers’ concert here in Manila was incredible. Aside from the energetic praise and worship, what I like the most was the time when Rudy Nikkerud exhorted about the all-sufficient, all-access power which our Father in heaven has for us. He has turned his testimony about his early years in the ministry to a powerful message which has challenged everyone.  There was also this profound moment when Sam Evans prayed for healing, and I know many people have been delivered and healed in Jesus’ name.

Truly, I can say that Filipinos love Planetshakers. No wonder that the Australian worship band scheduled two worship nights in the Philippines,
three—including the one in General Santos City. As Joth Hunt always says, Philippines is one of their favorite places.

Just right after the concert, like on the first night, Planetshakers has again made a time for autograph signing—the thing Filipinos are most excited about; but the sad part, this time no more selfies nor picture takings with the band allowed to accommodate all the concertgoers who want their stuff get autographed. Still, I’m so happy because my newly bought Even Greater CD+DVD was signed. :)

As for the setlist, there was no big difference in it on the two nights. As I have promised, I have for you in here the concert setlist for both nights; but please take note that the list I have may be incomplete or jumbled because I had to get out once in a while to go to House of Praise merchandise booth where I was volunteering. Planetshakers LIVE in MANILA [DAY 1] Journal

Maybe a lot of you guys know that I am an album collector, and I collect Christian albums, strictly. One of the Christian Artists whose albums I collect is Planetshakers from Melbourne, Australia. From first listen of their song in 2009, it became one of my dreams to see them in person. Years passed, a lot of their concerts were held here in my beloved country, the Philippines, but I never had the chance to attend any of those events. Until this year, I really never knew nor expected that I would meet them face to face! Whoa!

In 2014, April particularly, I’ve had the chance to watch a worship concert FOR THE FIRST TIME, that was Hillsong United’s Zion Tour. From that event on, I promised to myself that I will never miss any concert again. Should I call it concert madness? LOL. Name it, there’s Saved Festival with Esterlyn, Israel Houghton, Victory Worship, and Francis Chan; there was also Cindy Cruse-Ratcliff, and the latest on my list was Hillsong Worship No Other Name Asia Tour last April the 10th.

When I heard that Planetshakers is coming to town, I said to myself, THIS IS IT! Just weeks after the tickets been opened for selling, I bought myself a ticket so that the mistake of yesterday will not be repeated again. The amazing part was, a very, very good and generous friend from House of Praise, let’s call her “Ms. K,” sent me a message asking me and my sister if we would like to volunteer for House of Praise event merchandise crew, promising us an access pass. In my spirit, I just felt so blessed, and because of that, we said YES! My ticket that I bought? I gave it to my friend, concert buddy, Divina. :) By the way, that ticket is for today, the second night of Planetshakers' concert here in Manila.

Last night’s concert is simply amazing. ‘Twas so surreal, di ko akalaing ma-mi-meet and greet ko sila!! Because my sister and I hold access passes, we can literally roam around and go to different corners of Araneta Coliseum. I will never forget how my heart exploded when we went to the backstage before the concert started; we were standing right behind the Planetshakers worship team! It was so unbelievable and unexpected—I have taken a photo of Joth Hunt’s back, look:

After the concert, Planetshakers made the time to sign the loots of the concertgoers. This was also unexpected in the concert. I was so happy and rejoicing, we were the first in line to get our stuff signed by the band. I can’t really fathom the favor of the Lord—‘twas a dream come true.

Album Review: Planetshakers' Outback Worship Sessions

Known worldwide for their high-sounding rock-electronic dance music, Planetshakers from Melbourne, Australia has recently released their newest praise and worship album called “Outback Worship Sessions.” Featuring some of their biggest hits re-crafted by Grammy award-winning producer Ed Cash, this new album presents a “very different” Planetshakers. Far from what we are used of them, this new studio album is a beautiful rest from blasting guitars and electronic-synths effects to the arms of a very organic and intimate acoustic worship.

For the record, this is not the first time Planetshakers have made an acoustic album. In 2008, they have released the outstanding 14-cut “Beautiful Saviour: Acoustic Series [Volume 1],” and because of which, I have an enough idea how will Planetshakers sound without the swirling synths and electronic effects. I must say that the simpler musicality and lesser backing are the elements that separate “Outback Worship Sessions” from their preceding albums. These things have given each of the songs an emphasis vocally.What I love most about this release, aside from its intimate worship setting, is the message that it conveys, which shifts from one song to another. Songs like “Like A Fire,” “Spirit of God,” and “Leave Me Astounded” are all prayerful songs that ask for God’s spirit to come, move and saturate. Notice that on the fourth cut, “My Soul Longs for Jesus,” the message shifts to hunger, thirst, and longing for Jesus, while the succeeding tracks show the aftermath of a Holy Spirit indwelling—a life of endless praise.

“My Soul Longs For Jesus,” a song written by Ed Cash, is my most favorite track in the album. Sung by Sam Evans, this song is more of a hymnal in structure. I just love how the song goes, its every aspect—theologically rich and musically simple yet spirit-moving. Another theologically deep, faith-stirring song is “Made For Worship.” A worship ballad highly infused with very enticing folksy music—also sung by Evans.

The new treatment of the band’s loudest hits is also a very notable thing—all are made even better. These tracks include “Endless Praise,” “This Is The Day” (now features a female vocal), and “This Is Our Time.” “Nothing Is Impossible” is also worth mentioning for its newly added verse, which goes this way: “Speak to every limitation, victory is my declaration. The same power that raised You from the grave, is in me, so I will give you praise!”

As usual on their every release, Planetshakers has again set the bar high. “Outback Worship Sessions” is a complete album—very raw and honest, faith-stirring, musically brilliant, theologically rich, and most of all, very congregational. These elements are hardly found complete on worship albums these days. I am so grateful to say that Planetshakers never fails to amaze me. They are literally breaking every limitation.I strongly recommend this worship album!

Planetshakers To Release Outback Worship Sessions May 12th

Recording features top Planetshakers songs re-imagined by Grammy-winning Ed Cash, all geared for corporate worship

What started as a project to re-craft Planetshakers' most-loved worship anthems into a form accessible to worship teams representing the wider church body has since grown into a studio recording that is, as Aristotle might say, "greater than the sum of its parts."

Known for its cutting-edge, joy-infused sound that is full of energy and that has sparked the young and young at heart around the globe to celebrate in worship, Planetshakers' recent recording, This Is Our Time, immediately soared to the top of the overall charts in several countries during its first week at retail. The project, like the Planetshakers ministry, has transcended cultures, languages and geographic boundaries.

"Outback Worship Sessions is about taking our message further, sharing with as many as possible and empowering generations to win generations," says Planetshakers worship pastor Bj Pridham. "I think as a church, we have organically reached a younger audience. We want to be intentional to reach not just one generation, but all generations."

For the new album, Planetshakers tapped into the expertise of Grammy Award-winning, four-time Gospel Music Association Dove Award-winning "Producer of the Year," Ed Cash. Taking Outback Worship Sessions under his wing, and with church worship teams in mind, Cash gave a new, intimate 'voice' to Planetshakers' best-loved anthems. He not only brought out the best in the Planetshakers team, but also produced three brand new songs on the 11-track album.

Co-writing and producing the worldwide church anthem "How Great is Our God" with Chris Tomlin, and recently writing songs featured on albums by Jeremy Camp, Kari Jobe, Crowder, Laura Story, Hillsong and many more, Cash penned "My Soul Longs For Jesus" featured on Outback Worship Sessions. He further co-wrote "Spirit Of God" and "Father" for the album with Pridham, who is one of several featured vocalists from Planetshakers' worship team on the album.

"The moment I began co-writing with Bj over Skype, I knew that Heaven was going to fall heavy on this project," says Cash. "It became increasingly clear that the Planetshakers family has habitually drawn near to God, and in His matchless covenant fashion, He has drawn near to them! I pray the presence of the Lord will bless you as richly as you listen as He did me while working on it."

In addition to the new recording, lead singers featured on Outback Worship Sessions will literally fly into the heart of Australia's Outback to record the brand new videos "Like A Fire," "My Soul Longs for Jesus," "Nothing Is Impossible" and possibly more songs from the new project.

"Set in a small church in the Outback of Australia, the videos will be recorded with a band playing in a very organic, natural setup," explains Planetshakers Lead Singer and Music Director Joth Hunt. "There will be no flashing lights or big production elements, but we will be utilizing aerial cinematography interspersed throughout the video capturing the spectacular surroundings of the Australian Outback."

Each of these videos will be offered free as a resource to worship leaders following the May 12 release of the album. Integrity Music will also offer a companion digital Outback Worship Sessions songbook free of charge through WeAreWorship.com.

#AlbumReview: Planetshakers' This Is Our Time

Before the year ends, Melbourne, Australia-based worship band Planetshakers released their newest live praise and worship album, This Is Our Time. Boasting 15 tracks available in Standard and Deluxe editions, this new record is their second album for 2014. But it is no longer surprising, for they have done this a lot of times before. Their diligence and gift in songwriting is wonderfully shown through the years.

It is undeniable that “This Is Our Time” marks a new season for Planetshakers City Church, for the message of the songs on this record shows just that. Their music is like no other; and it has captured the hearts of people across the globe. Their mission to empower generations, to win generations, is prophetically manifested on their projects.

The title cut, “This Is Our Time”, opens the album with an energetic praise which has become the signature of the group. More than any other Christian artists, Planetshakers have resourced the church with a plethora of praise songs which the people, especially the youths love to sing. Celebration continues with the singing of the next track, “Joy”, and “My Heart Is Alive”. These songs offer a variety of instrumentation which will surely awaken your senses and lead you to dance for Jesus.

Previously heard on their Endless Praise album as a studio recorded track, “Leave Me Astounded” marks the first worship song on this project. Being one of the prime cuts on the preceding album, this new version is a very congregational one unlike its first release. Worship Pastor Sam Evans has given the song a ‘churchy’ treatment which is good.

“Covered”, the fifth track, is one of the simplest songs on This Is Our Time yet the most theologically-rich. Written by two big names in the field of worship songwriting today—Israel Houghton and Planetshakers’ very own Joth Hunt, this song declares Christ’s atonement and His grace given to humanity. Being said that it’s a co-write with Houghton, “Covered” is the carrier single of his upcoming 2015 album, “Alive In Asia”. And speaking of God’s amazing grace, another Hunt-written song by the same theme is “It’s Your Love” which for me is the album’s most congregation-friendly song because of its familiar and easy to learn melody and lyrics.

One of the tracks you don’t want to miss in this new album is the faith-stirring “The Water Is Rising”. Instrumentally and lyrically-brilliant, this is one of the album’s prime cuts. It speaks of God’s power and ability to do miracles and bring healing.

Born out of a spontaneous worship, Natalie Ruiz’ “Kiss Towards” on their “Endless Praise” album is one of my favorite tracks; and I believe This Is Our Time’s “Holy” is also a track birthed out of the spontaneous worship. Though lyrically short, its different atmosphere captivates the very heart of the people as they sing: holy…holy…holy. And if you’ve been carried away by the ethereal moment brought by “Holy”, their cover of the Gaither classic “He Touched Me” is simply magnificent. Surely, your spirit will be filled with joy and your heart overflow as you listen to it.

Joth Hunt’s gift in songwriting is so astounding. As a matter of fact, he has written the majority of the songs on Planetshakers’ recent releases. “Look To You” is just one of the tracks in the album that catches the listener’s attention at first listen; and it’s Hunt-penned. This is, I think the most appealing and catchy track on This Is Our Time, and also my favorite. Before the album ends, Joth’s co-write “Abba, Father” leaves the message of our Heavenly Father’s love towards us.

Overall, This Is Our Time is an excellent album to end 2014 and to start 2015 with praise. I must say that this album is one of 2014’s best releases, and Planetshakers’ best, so far. They always set the bar high. There is just one thing that I pray their team would work on for their future releases, that is to write songs that are more theologically-rich. I believe people today need songs that are sound and full of theology, songs that will draw them closer to God, to the knowledge of who He is.

Album Review: Endless Praise by Planetshakers

I have had a privilege to write a review about Planetshakers’ recently released album, Endless Praise. Recorded LIVE at one of their conference nights, this new album comprises 14 tracks. Explosive, anthemic, and energetic are some of the words that describe it.

The album opens with the title track ‘Endless Praise’ which will excite any listener. The high volume of energy, guitars blasting out and sound effects are so much present. Over the years, this has become the ‘signature’ of Planetshakers in their albums. But wait, there’s more! You’ll find and hear more “praise party songs” all-throughout the album, including: Turn It Up, Dance, Praise You Lord, Oh Your Love, and We Are Free.

The second track ‘Turn It Up’ starts with synths and is somehow parallel to ‘This Is the Day’ also by Planetshakers. The tune and familiar dance beat will get you dancing onto the next track ‘Dance.’ This one is so explosive, and full of electronic effects. The entirety of the song is simply epic.

The next track ‘No Other Name’ is the first worship song in the album, and one of my favourites. Its melody and lyrical content will touch the heart of the worshipper. It’s like the modern remake of an old song. The whole six minutes of the song is spirit-moving; truly there’s no other name like JESUS. ‘Made for Worship’ is another gorgeous and touching worship song. There’s nothing more beautiful than hearing the people of God singing out loud, and giving all to Him. The track ‘Kiss Towards’ is so ethereal. In the silence of the crowd you could hear their heart worshipping. I could feel the intensity inside Natalie Ruiz, as her spirit sings in the overflow of the previous track.

Led by Joth Hunt, the next song ‘Unto God’ explodes with intensity as the song grows. The intimate worship moments with this song will bring you to your knees, as you sing “Holy is the Lord… Holy is the Lord.” The praise party is back with the synth-filled ‘Praise You Lord.’ I love the pre-chorus: “We are redeemed, set free, forgiven…” which prepares you for the singing of the joyful chorus. The bridge is a bold declaration of John 8:36—whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Another praise party song ‘Oh Your Love’ opens with heavy synths, bass and electronic mix effects. The whole song is a huge blast.

The victory and finished work of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was declared in ‘Our God Reigns.’ This one is timely and ideal song for Easter. ‘Set Me Ablaze’ is a prayer put to song. A prayer asking for more of Jesus, more of His spirit, presence and power.Sam’s voice is fervent, and the crowd immediately grabs hold of the anthemic chorus, creating such a forceful and powerful moment. ‘Abide in me’ is also a prayer for more of God.

Last in the list of praise party songs is ‘We Are Free,’ which is laced with people’s shouting. The entirety of the track is well crafted which makes it my favourite track in the album. It’s easy to be learned, especially the bridge: “We are free, we are free and we have the Victory!” The studio recorded song ‘Leave Me Astounded’ ends the album. As it grows so does the intensity. The collection of voices brings power out of the song. What an awesome song to end the album.

I commend Planetshakers for another fantastic album. So far, this is one of the best albums in my collection. Their creativity, passion and dedication are manifested in this project. Two thumbs up!

Let endless praise resound in all the land, to the glory of Him who seats on the throne—Jesus Christ.

Dove Award-nominated Planetshakers Band also returns for the second consecutive year to San Diego for a Planetshakers Awakening event at Cornerstone Church National City Campus March 7-8, 2014.  Planetshakers further adds a second U.S. Awakening in Dallas March 20-22, 2014 at Calvary Church Irving Campus.  With the goal to see every person empowered, transformed and equipped to fulfill their God-given destiny, thousands are anticipated to attend the events that will feature compelling messages from speakers Russell Evans, Sam Evans, Sergio De La Mora, Ben Dailey and more.  Australia’s largest youth/young adult Christian movements, Planetshakers Awakening registrations are being accepted now at www.planetshakersawakening.com (http://www.planetshakers.com/awakening/).

Planetshakers Kids: Nothing Is Impossible {Album Review}

One of the biggest names in Australian Christian Music Scene, and one of the fastest growing Christian Churches in Australia—Planetshakers brings us their latest album under Kids Praise series, Nothing is Impossible. Released last year 2013, this 15-track album is composed of remakes of the most loved Planetshakers hits for the recent years, tuned up and fitted for children.

What I loved most in the album is its song line up; all of the songs included in the album are in my personal playlist of Planetshakers. The album also includes three scripture readings and prayers that will encourage children to read the Bible and pray.

Surely, children will love to sing the title track “Nothing is Impossible” with its faith-stirring message. The enthusiasm and energy is well consistent. With the same energy, the fourth and fifth song “This is the Day” and “You Are Good” are packed with electronic effects, both are songs of thanksgiving for God’s goodness and faithfulness. Indeed, your hands will be lifted high as you join and sing the sixth track “Put Your Hands Up”, where the children’s voices are noticeably alive. Acts 2:24 was read to introduce the next track, “The Anthem”. The rich worshipful atmosphere emphasizes the victory in Christ. “I Call You Jesus” was a highlight off the album for me, the bold declarations:”Nobody greater than You, nobody stronger than You...nobody bigger than You, no one can do what You do, no name is higher than the name of Jesus,” is simply heart-moving. The last three praise songs: “Let Praise Awaken”, “Get Up” and “Limitless” are awesome remakes filled with loud electronic effects and full of children’s participations. In increasing intensity, “We Cry Out” is a prayer for the healing of the nations and a cry for revival, where at the latter part you’ll hear children of different nationalities praying for their nations; and in ethereal worship moment the album ends with “Great is Your Love”.

Nothing is Impossible album is certainly a must resource for kids and for the children’s ministry. Most of the songs are filled with electronic effects as I’ve stated previously. I presume that some songs are not newly recorded, because I could hear Joth Hunt’s high-pitching voice and Pastor Russell’s, then re-mixed with kids’ voices. Also, I noticed that the songs were made shorter than their original album releases, presumably for the children not to feel “bored” of singing longs stanzas, which is good.

Overall, this record, with its songs, scripture readings plus prayers, gives the children a unique opportunity to worship God while impressing in their hearts the hunger for worship and for more of Jesus in spite of their age. Strongly recommended!
