The Truth About Being A Worship Pastor by David Santistevan

The line between rockstar and worship leader seems to be getting closer and closer in our culture.
We consumers travel from concert to concert, album to album in search of the latest greatest talent.
Because of this, we can almost equate worship ministry as a talent show. Whoever has the greatest, most crowd-pleasing talent leads the best worship.
Today, we’re going to strip it all away and look at worship ministry at its foundation. What if worship ministry was more of a local, pastoral calling than it was a platform for your gifting?

My church has a strong calling to plant other churches. When we plant a church, we define a pastor who is called to serve a certain community. They build a launch team, develop relationships, and serve a city. They are called, planted, rooted, grounded in a city.
What if worship leaders saw themselves in this way? That they were called to a certain place? That they were more than just musicians who make the service more interesting. But that they were a pastor, called to pastor people?
I have a feeling that we need more pastoral musicians than we need rockstar musicians. We need more worship pastors than simply worship leaders. Worship leaders lead music. Worship pastors lead people. We need leaders ready to disciple.

3 Worship Leadership Essentials

So let’s dive into these worship ministry essentials.
1. They Lead People – Great worship pastors don’t just lead music or songs or services. They lead people. That changes how they approach a worship service. It’s not a matter of rocking out to a few songs or playing excellent transitions.
It’s about knowing who they serve. It’s about communicating well with the room. It’s about engagement and trust.
2. They Love People – Loving people may not come naturally to you. But the best worship pastors ask God for His heart for their people. They pray, “Give me a passion for your people in this city. Let me feel the burden that you have for them, O God.” As a good friend of mine said recently, it’s about “seeing the story” in people. This love then influences the way they lead worship.
Worship leading isn’t an “opportunity” for the worship leader, it’s a way to serve God’s people in their pursuit of God. When you know the pain and joy your people are acquainted with, you better know how to plan your worship services.
3. They Build People – It’s not about building a name. It’s about building influence. Great worship pastors are invested in building up the people around them. They seek to grow musicians. They seek to raise up other worship leaders. They give people opportunity. They have a “system” of discipleship. They’re not simply focused on their own talent development.
I love how Derek Webb put it in my most recent podcast:
“Great Worship Leaders should be so wrapped up and intimately acquainted with the sorrow, the joy, the struggle, and the longer narrative arcs of their local community that they know exactly how to curate the songs that are going to be sung by those people.”
Here’s my challenge: begin to focus less on your music, creativity, and innovation for now. Focus more on people – leading, loving, and building them. You may discover a pastoral passion you never knew you had.

Question: What would you say is the defining mark of a worship pastor?

Not Afraid: Does Fear Hinder Your Worship Leadership? (Devotional)

Not Afraid: Does Fear Hinder Your Worship Leadership? by Josh Lopez

God has not given us a spirit of fear but of sound mind, power and love. – II Timothy 1:7

I love this verse. Paul was reminding Timothy what God saw when He looked at him and how God created him. Even though this is such a great verse, let’s just be completely honest – most of us don’t walk through life without fear.  Instead, our dreams, vision and purpose are paralyzed by fear.  For years, I struggled with fear of rejection.

I was a fifteen year-old kid who watched my dad become a heroin addict and then got in a fist fight with him. He threw me out of the house and said these words: “you are not my son!” It was there that the root of my fear began…

I never wanted to be rejected like that again. I didn’t understand at the time that my dad needed help and that I was not a bad son; I only took away that I was not good enough. So I spent years trying to prove myself…that I was good enough. When I gave my life to Jesus in 1996, it was the greatest decision that I had ever made. I began a great journey of healing. Fear was still very prevalent, though.  In fact, I took that same fear into my relationship with God and others. I aimed to please, always fearing rejection. When I was rejected, I would shut down and very quickly isolate myself from the world. This cycle went on for years until one day God began to show me that I was good enough by what He did on the cross. He created me to the tiniest detail and everything He saw was good. I began to embrace the truth of His word in Psalm 139 –  that I was fearfully and wonderfully made. That the wonderful thoughts that He has towards me, outnumber the grains of sand. There were so many verses in the Bible that pointed to me being accepted and not rejected. So now every time this voice of fear would pop up, I could combat it with truth.

But this is just one fear. God continues to deal with these fears in my life. I thank God today because He has helped me change these mindsets that I used to have. I don’t have to fear rejection. I can make decisions based on what I hear God telling me and not follow others. I have been set free from trying to get the crowd to applaud just to affirm my gift and calling. I don’t spend my time thinking of what I can do for God so that people will see that I am great. Instead, I desire to be a part of what He is already doing and realize now that it is not about me, but it is and has always been about Him.
Here is my encouragement to you. The quicker you identify the root of your fear, the quicker you can begin the beautiful journey of everything God already planned for you.

Don’t let fear paralyze everything that you were meant to be!
Don’t let fear steal the great things that God has planned for you!

Today, embrace courage and dig deep down in your heart, find the root and let God start dealing with that fear. You were made for so much more…you were made to live and love not afraid.

Upgrade: from Adequacy to Abundance {Book Review}

BOOK TITLE: Upgrade: from Adequacy to Abundance
AUTHOR: Michael Catt
ISBN: 978-971-789-268-9
THEME: Inspiration/ Motivation
PUBLISHER: CLC Publications
OVERALL RATING: 4.7/ 5
PAGES: 177

UPGRADE, noun: an upward grade or slope; increase, rise; improvement; verb: to increase or improve the grade of; to raise the quality of; to improve for increased usefulness.

Executive Producer of high-grossing inspirational/ Christian films: Fireproof, Facing the Giants and Courageous, authored another book that is worth buying and worth reading for. Along with his books “Fireproof Your Life,” “Prepare for the Rain” and “Courageous Living,” this is another book on living a Victorious and a Deeper Christian Life.Michael divided this book into three sections, with so much of biblical truths plus easy yet profound teachings that will help you stir up yourself.

Catt declares that the chapters of this book were originally birthed in his heart as a sermon on what some call “the Deeper Christian Life,” “the Victorious Christian Life,” and “the Spirit–filled Life.” But he made it clear that this is not a “prosperity gospel book.”

In a technological reference, Upgrade is to improve for increased usefulness, to raise the quality, and this is the message of this book – to raise the quality of your living. Are you living the “upgraded life” which God has designed for you to live and walk in? Is that the quality that you think God has predestined for you? Jesus made it clear in the book of John chapter ten, verse ten [letter b]: “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” It’s the abundance which God wants for you, the fullness of living. “Many Christians have resigned themselves to an “average” Christian life of defeat and monotony,” Michael writes. God is calling you, never settle for less – leave the courts of mediocrity for His greater glory!

To upgrade your Christian living is a great privilege because it is God’s idea for your life, for our lives. To start with very little is ok but to remain little is not of God. He don’t want you to have just the taste of His goodness, He wants you to enjoy it! Never live a life of mediocrity. Do something! Claim your upgrade!

What Worship Style Are You?

Today’s post is more of a poll than it is a teaching.
I want to know…what worship style are you?
Piano? Banjo? Organ? Guitar? Synth? Vocoder?
A few weeks ago I shared my criteria for selecting new songs as well as how I find new songs.
A friend of mine messaged me privately when I mentioned who the “staple” songwriters were that I look for.
You see, he leads worship with predominantly “Black Gospel” music. The most “crossover” artist he does is Israel Houghton. But he’s into songs from Judith Christie-McAllister, John P. Kee, William Murphy, Vashawn Mitchell, James Fortune, Charles Jenkins, Kurt Carr, Byron Cage, and Fred Hammond.
Me? These songwriters and artists aren’t even on my radar. But the question begs to be asked: should they be?

Is the Guitar Overtaking Worship Music?

What’s interesting is that this type of music doesn’t require the ever popular, guitar-oriented worship band with two singers. It’s driven by a couple keyboards, organ, 6-9 singers, and sometimes even a choir.
I know for me, this type of music doesn’t get included in my repertoire. I’m as white as white can be. But it got me thinking: why don’t I include this type of music on occasion? Am I missing a beautiful element of diversity in my services?
What worship style are you? Do you feel the style of your church isn’t given voice in our current, modern worship music?
And it seems that most churches are conforming to the guitar, tenor-vocal driven, modern, pop/rock worship sound.
As the body of Christ all over the world, our styles should be unique. The message of the Gospel never changes but as we incarnate that truth in different cultures it needs to take on new flavor.
So I want to hear from you, friends. What worship style are you?
What music do you select? Who are you listening to?

5 Leadership Actions To Take After A Ministry Train Wreck

A few weeks ago, I was stressed out of my mind.
I love when a plan comes together, but this wasn’t one of those moments.
I had a musician cancel, last minute. During the service, we lost track of the click. No one in the congregation seemed to engage with the songs.
My voice was weak and tired and I felt like everyone was staring me down in disgust. I swear I saw a few tomatoes fly past my head.
I wanted to crawl in a hole and forget this service ever happened. Ever been in a situation like this?

44514845_572eb5d38a_b
Sure, moments like this always seems like the end of the world from our perspective. We’re creatives. When we don’t perform well our identity is at stake. We rise and fall on what we view as success.
But it’s important to realize that these moments will come. Train wrecks will happen. Are you prepared for them?
Through many train wrecks, I’ve learned that moments like this can be more of a blessing than a curse, if you respond properly.

5 Steps to Take After a Ministry Train Wreck

Here are 5 ways you should respond to ministry train wrecks:
1. Own the Responsibility – When something goes wrong it’s easy to start pointing fingers. But leaders own the mistake. They recognize it as a blind spot in their leadership and they get comfortable with the most uncomfortable phrase: “I’m sorry.” Don’t run. Don’t hide. Don’t make excuses.
2. Know Where Your Identity Lies – It’s important to know who you are before you set foot on a stage. That way success won’t sway you from your identity as a son or daughter of God. Failure won’t cause you to doubt your calling. I love Bob Sorge’s words in Dealing With the Rejection & Praise of Man:
I noticed that Jesus had the habit of praying after His ministry successes. For example, after feeding the five thousand, He immediately departed for the mountain in order to pray. It was my custom for many years to invest all my prayer energy before ministry and, then, after ministry to ‘crash’(relax). But Jesus gave Himself to prayer in the natural ‘down time’ that comes after ministry exertion. Not only did this guard Him from temptation, but it was also His opportunity to be renewed in His Father’s affirmation. This was the time when the Father would tell Him, ‘Good job, my Son!’
3. Tweak Your Systems – Oftentimes, failure happens because we haven’t followed through with our systems. Or, our systems need tweaked. It’s important to know the difference when nothing goes according to plan. Ask, was this a systems failure or was this part of the natural ebb and flow of ministry life? Tweak your systems if need be, but don’t allow failure or success to sway your identity.
4. Redefine Success – It’s in those moments when nothing goes according to plan that we have the opportunity to redefine success. In my situation, I was overly obsessed with looking and sounding good. I was completely focused on flawless music execution. A better picture of success would have been for the people of God to connect with their Maker in worship. Looking good, sounding great, and everyone leaving complimenting my musical brilliance is a sad success, but one I’m all too often obsessed with.
5. Teach Others – Don’t you wish you could just sweep your failures under the rug, forever forgotten? Yes, except that you would lose the one thing that gives you influence. Part of what makes a leader a great leader is that they learn from their failures and teach others through it. They don’t hide what went wrong and always put their best foot forward. They use the mess-ups to invest in other leaders, teaching them how to respond and deal with difficulty.
So next time you are faced with a ministry train wreck, don’t lost heart. Own responsibility if you dropped the ball, and tweak the necessary systems. Know your identity isn’t based on any success or failure, but on God’s love for you. Be reminded what true success is and teach others through what happened.
So while you don’t want to seek out train wrecks, know that they present an incredible opportunity for growth.
What about you? Let’s be honest today.
What was your last ministry train wreck? I know I have a few others I could share.
What did you learn from it? You can leave a comment

Heaven and the Afterlife {Book Review}

AUTHOR: Dr. James Garlow with Keith Wall
ISBN: 978-971-789-237-5
PUBLISHER: CLC Publications
OVERALL RATING: 4.9/5

I've just finished reading through the pages of this very interesting book, the very time I saw this, it really caught my attention. This book is so extraordinary and so profound…

Christians and non-Christians often have questions about heaven, hell, life after death, angels and demons. How does it really like to be in heaven, hell, to die? Is it painful? Comforting? Frightening? Exhilarating? Exhausting? Hot? Cold? Because of these, many people have a huge fear of dying and of the afterlife because they are clueless and they are not yet prepared about it and we often associate dying with pain and loss. This subject is so sensitive to many that they are so reluctant about it. But belief in the afterlife is a cornerstone of Christian faith as Jesus tells us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son for whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have an everlasting life.” And as Paul also writes in Philippians 1:21, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Afterlife is real, but not everything you hear about it is, get the answers you need to decide for yourself. Making an illustration of Heaven & Hell or how does it feels in the afterlife is like drawing a map of a place you haven’t been reached. Heaven and the Afterlife helps you sort out what is fiction and what is fact in everything you hear about the afterlife with honest answers based on years of biblical study of the author. This book also has topics about: Universalism which suggests that all will be saved in the end, Annihilationism which proposes that those without faith will cease to exist, Purgatory that suggests being a stopover on the way to heaven, and Reincarnation.

Now, ponder this: God has prepared an unimaginable place for you to spend eternity, and he wants to enjoy it with you! Get deeper in relationship with Him and work out your faith and have the assurance of salvation in your heart, because at the end of the day everyone, every single person without exemption will face death. The biggest question is: “Are you ready to meet you God, to meet Jesus?

Get ready, be prepared & discover Heaven and the afterlife!

Get your copy now! It is available for you in all CLC Bookstores.
