Getty's Live at the Gospel Coalition {Album Review}

ALBUM TITLE: Live at the Gospel Coalition
ALBUM ARTIST: Keith & Kristyn Getty
RATING: 4.9/5

Martin Luther said,” The gift of language combine with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music.” Inspired by these words, Keith & Kristyn Getty has a mission to develop a canon of new and theologically-rich hymns for the church worldwide. After the release of their four critically-acclaimed albums: In Christ Alone (2007), Awaken the Dawn (2009), Joy-An Irish Christmas (2011), and Hymns for the Christian Life, here comes a new offering, and it’s the couples’ first live album, recorded live at The Gospel Coalition National Conference in Orlando.

This new record showcases 16 beautifully crafted song, one new, two traditional hymns and 13 songs they’ve written from the past years including: the energetic “Come People of the Risen King”, the stunning “In Christ Alone”, the prayerful “Speak, O Lord”, the uillean pipe-laced “O Church Arise” and the engaging “By Faith.”

Opening with the very energetic “Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed”, the enthusiastic uillean pipe that starts the song will motivate you to “Sing hallelujah!” Its rich instrumentation suits perfectly to Kristyn’s sweet and angelic voice. As you reach the chorus your heart will be stirred as you hear a collection of various voices, as if angels on high descended to join the chorus!

The newly arranged traditional hymn “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” is perfectly sang by Kristyn accompanied with hundreds of voice in a vibrant and rich musical hour. With their goal to produce theologically-rich hymns, they impose the spirit of unity based on Psalm 133 with “Oh How Good It is”“Across The Lands”, and “O Church Arise”, Oh how good it is when the family of God dwells together in spirit, in faith and in unity!

Embracing their Irish roots, they offer the gorgeous “Lift High the Name of Jesus”, you can really feel the high participation of God’s people as they clap their hands with this new song from the Getty’s. The heartfelt reading of Isaiah 53:4-5 to intro the solemn “The Power of the Cross” will stir you up, continuing to the ethereal “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” with an astounding communal singing. Perfectly made for quite time and moments of peace are the songs “Compassion Hymns”, “Kyrie Eleison”, “Holy Spirit Living Breath” and “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty”.  Good to the spirit and relaxing to the soul. Returning with high level of energy, “In Christ Alone” exhorts the hope we found in Jesus, our Solid Rock, the outhor and perfector of our Faith; and as we run this race, it is awesome to be reminded by the anthem “By Faith”.

With all that was made and produced in this album, Getty’s mission is well reflected and manifested in this record. Not just “good” to listen, they bring us songs that are conformed to the scriptures. With their commitment to lead people to worship at the feet of our precious Jesus, their works are breaking denominational barriers, for God’s greater glory. Indeed, this album is another spirit-breathed and biblically sound, made to exalt Jesus’ name more than ever!

The City Harmonic Receives First Artist & Group of the Year GMA Canada Covenant Awards Nominations

NEWS SOURCE: Hoganson Media
September 23, 2013

Named New Artist of the Year in 2011, receiving Praise & Worship Song of the Year last year and gathering four GMA Canada Covenant Awards nominations this year, The City Harmonic add their first nods for both Artist and Group of the Year. Having won four Covenants so far, the band is also nominated this year for Praise & Worship Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year for "Holy (Wedding Day)" from the band's internationally acclaimed debut album, I Have A Dream (Feels Like Home). The 35th Annual Covenant Awards will be held in Burlington, Ontario, Nov. 6 (www.gmacanada.ca).
The growing momentum for The City Harmonic is being carried forward with the band's five-star rated sophomore album,HEART, which has already gone to No. 1 in Canada and No. 4 in the U.S. on the iTunes® Inspirational and Christian & Gospel charts respectively, and was named a RELEVANT "Editor's Pick." Co-produced by the band - vocalist and pianist Elias Dummer, bassist Eric Fusilier, guitarist Aaron Powell and drummer Josh Vanderlaan - and Jared Fox, HEART places Christ at the center while delving into themes of grace, discipleship and being, and becoming, truly human, all the while giving the listener permission to sing out in hope, in hurt.
Taking this communal aesthetic prominent in all of the band's music to the masses, including new songs from HEART and its fan favorites "Manifesto," "Mountaintop," "Holy (Wedding Day)" and more, The City Harmonic launches its "The Heart Tour" Oct. 5 in Denver (Snyder, CO). Presented by World Vision and featuring special guests Shawn McDonald and The Royal Royal, The City Harmonic has also launched a crowd funding campaign through Indiegogo (www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-city-harmonic) to purchase a new bus for its touring. Known for its engaging live performances, The City Harmonic's latest concert itinerary, information on tickets and more can be found at www.TheCityHarmonic.com.
At the core of the new album is the first radio single and video, "A City On A Hill," which is steeped in the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5 and continues to receive airplay across the country. The new single and all 14 songs on HEART build from where the band left off with its widely acclaimed, JUNO Award-winning I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home). Reflecting life lived by the band members since their full-length debut, the new album shifts from the dream of what could and should be to the complexities of how to follow the true humanity of Christ's example in the world.
Experiencing that complexity firsthand over the past two years, The City Harmonic members went from working day jobs to recording and touring full time. Aaron had his first child, Josh was married, Elias had his fourth child and Eric was diagnosed with cancer. In a very real sense, life set the context for HEART. See Elias and Eric talking about the new album athttp://youtu.be/YqH6JnqRcYU.
Forming nearly four years ago, The City Harmonic is four worship leaders from four churches in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada that went from anonymity to widespread acclaim, headlining tours across North America and gathering numerous awards along the way. In addition to the Juno Award, the band has a Gospel Music Association (GMA) New Artist of the Year Dove Award nomination and nearly 3,000,000 YouTube channel views. The band's "Manifesto" has sold well over 100,000 copies, marking the only song from a new artist in 2011 to break into the top 10 of the SoundScan Top Current digital singles sales chart.

Sidewalk Prophets: Merry Christmas to You {Album Review}

ALBUM TITLE: Merry Christmas to You
ALBUM ARTIST: Sidewalk Prophets
RATING: 4.9/5

Christmas is in the air! The most awaited season of the year has come! The happiest of days is finally here! As we enter the season with joy and excitement, Sidewalk Prophets greet us Merry Christmas to You, their latest Christmas worship album offering. Featuring 12 exciting songs, this album brings us back in time when Heaven was born into earth!

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said, fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord—makes a very clever intro to the first song, What A Glorious Night. Its lyrical content is the perfect expression of the passages found in Luke 2:8-11; this song is so energetic, vocally and instrumentally brilliant. The hand-claps and bells at the background is so nice, a perfect song to open the album in great excitement& enthusiasm.White Christmas is sweet and jazzy, I love how the song started and France’s falsetto is beautifully done. Backing vocals is so clear& you can hear the bells that continue through the upbeat Give Me Christmas. You can picture out the joy brought by the season and the warm spirit of love. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ feeling and emotion is capturing; its musicianship is engaging. Piano-laced & lyrically amusing Hey Moon is so heartfelt, vocals are warm and expressive. Impressive is the shifting to a short verse of the anthem Silent Night. Its simple, honest and raw instrumentation is compelling; it creates an atmosphere of that silent night when Love came down.

Bells are here again to accompany the album title track Merry Christmas to You. It opens with acoustic guitar strums/hits; the song is jam-packed & well-accomplished. Bells are still here added with drumbeats in Holly Jolly Christmas, it resembles with other Christmas songs that has been the signature of its kind. The never fading atmosphere of the solemn What Child is This Silent Night is very powerful and raw. Both have been Christmas favorites. The vocally distinctive & well-orchestrated The Spirit of Christmas has an awesome backing chorale to be commended, it sounds like a gospel song. My favorite track Hope Was Born That Night is a gorgeous song of praise and exaltation to our King. Everything in it is so perfect; the message of the song is simple & meaningful. It will leave you stunned with a grateful heart& feeling of excitement; while the lively Because It’s Christmas describes the Christmas atmosphere, I love how it ended with a Christmas tune. It reminds us to never forget the reason for the season—Jesus, our Savior. That is why He came to earth to bring peace, love, hope and salvation to all mankind; and those who will believe in Him will have an eternal life.

Closing thoughts:
This Christmas worship project has a very high level of musicianship, a no-ordinary album. People of all ages will surely love every song in this record. Everything in it is well made!
Rejoice in Christ the King! Merry Christmas to You!

The Tale of Pastor Jeremiah Steepek and the Homeless Man

Pastor Jeremiah Steepek transformed himself into a homeless person and went to the 10,000 member church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that morning. He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people for service, only 3 people out of the 7-10,000 people said hello to him. He asked people for change to buy food - NO ONE in the church gave him change. He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was asked by the ushers if he would please sit n the back. He greeted people to be greeted back with stares and dirty looks, with people looking down on him and judging him.

As he sat in the back of the church, he listened to the church announcements and such. When all that was done, the elders went up and were excited to introduce the new pastor of the church to the congregation. "We would like to introduce to you Pastor Jeremiah Steepek." The congregation looked around clapping with joy and anticipation. The homeless man sitting in the back stood up and started walking down the aisle. The clapping stopped with ALL eyes on him. He walked up the altar and took the microphone from the elders (who were in on this) and paused for a moment then he recited,

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

'The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

After he recited this, he looked towards the congregation and told them all what he had experienced that morning. Many began to cry and many heads were bowed in shame. He then said, "Today I see a gathering of people, not a church of Jesus Christ. The world has enough people, but not enough disciples. When will YOU decide to become disciples?"

He then dismissed service until next week.

Being a Christian is more than something you claim. It's something you live by and share with others.

Getting Through Your Spiritual Winter (Devotional)

Getting Through Your Spiritual Winter (Devotional)

By Jasmine Green on September 16, 2013
We’ve just finished our winter season here in Australia and as I eagerly bid farewell to the shorter days, chilly nights and frosty mornings, it reminds me of the spiritual “winter” season we sometimes go through. It’s in that season, when you’re awaiting a miracle, a breakthrough or an answer, that the hope for “sunnier” days is something that you constantly need to remind your spirit and your mind.
For over one year, my husband, James, and I had desired to have our first baby. After many months into this journey and no results, it seemed like “winter” had definitely set in.
In the natural, it’s difficult to speak positive and affirmative declarations of faith and hope when all results and indications point to the negative and the opposite of what you envision. Yet, it’s in the supernatural and the impossible that God is at work. And it’s through this knowledge and truth that we get through the winters.
One such key passage is Habakkuk 3:17-19 (MSG):Though the cherry trees don’t blossom and the strawberries don’t ripen,

Though the apples are worm-eaten and the wheat fields stunted,

Though the sheep pens are sheepless and the cattle barns empty,

I’m singing joyful praise to God.
I’m turning cartwheels of joy to my Savior God.
Counting on God’s Rule to prevail, I take heart and gain strength.

I run like a deer. I feel like I’m king of the mountain!
We clung to and spoke that passage over our lives for almost two years, and last month (coincidentally, the final month of winter in Australia), our baby boy arrived in the world.
If you’re still awaiting your miracle, take heart, meditate on and speak His Holy Word over your life.
And if you need prayer, feel free to leave a comment below or send a message to office[at]allaboutworship[dot]com. We’d love to support you in faith.

Tides, The Latest from Bethel Live

Bethel Music, the worship ministry of Redding, CA-based Bethel Church, launched its first-ever studio album, TIDES, to unprecedented international acclaim. Released Sept. 3 with global distribution through Fuel Music Distribution, the album became the biggest retail debut ever for Bethel Music, selling nearly 15,000 copies and marking a 134% growth over last year's debut of its best-selling album, For The Sake Of The World. This week, TIDES not only hit No. 30 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 12 on the Overall Digital Albums (between Neko Case and Avenge Sevenfold) charts, but also No. 1 on the overall Top Christian/Gospel Albums and Praise & Worship Billboard retail charts.
"Bethel Music is an amazing ministry sharing music that not only resonates with and impacts people across this nation, but across the world," says Tony Patoto, The Fuel Music Management Co president. "This new partnership between Bethel and Fuel Music Distribution highlights what can be achieved with focus, determination and expertise and with incredible music, ministry and vision."
Hitting as high as No. 7 in the U.S. and No. 10 in Canada on the overall iTunes® Album charts, TIDES further sold more than 10,000 singles, including 4,000 copies of the Jenn Johnson led "Chasing You." One of the most downloaded digital Christian singles this week, "Chasing You" is a song about following God with insatiable abandon. While other artists have garnered significant airplay with their recordings of Bethel Music songs, "Chasing You" went to radio earlier this month, becoming the first Bethel Music single to ever be serviced directly to radio.
In addition to "Chasing You," TIDES is filled with songs of adoration, instruction and worship that speak not only of what God has done, but also what He is doing now, in the highest and lowest of tides. Taking the new music and worship favorites like the 2013 Dove Award nominated "One Thing Remains" to the masses, Bethel Music's Brian and Jenn Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Steffany Frizzell Gretzinger and William Matthews have recently seen capacity crowds across the West Coast in cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Portland. Their "Night of Worship & Ministry" tour continues tonight in Seattle and tomorrow in Vancouver, BC before wrapping up in Kelowna, BC (9/13). For all the latest tour detail, go to http://bethelmusic.com/tidestour/.
"Our events are not just singing worship songs, but also amazing nights of ministry time as well," says Joel Taylor, Director of Bethel Music. "We are partnering with each city to press in and experience God's presence that we believe is shifting spiritual atmospheres."
Over the last four years, Bethel Music has grown from being a local church music ministry to becoming a global outreach featuring a cadre of songwriters and worship leaders, a half-dozen CDs, chart-topping songs, and both online and on-campus worship schools. TIDES is again extending Bethel Music's reach. An expression of passionate emotion, anthemic declaration, and sometimes surprising experimentation, the album features original songs and music led by the aforementioned artists, as well as Matt Stinton and Hunter Thompson.
The album also addresses the popular maxim that "the only thing you can count on is change." Brian Johnson's answer is that there is one more thing you can count on. "Through it all," he declares, "God is in control. Through the whole album, there's struggle, there's tension, but then there is a reminder that God is always in control."
Here is what the critics are saying about TIDES:
"Bethel welcomes creativity and musical growth, and TIDES is a perfect example. More importantly, this fresh expression is revealed in the prayer poetry filling each song… Almost without flaw, the music marries the tone of the lyric perfectly…the artistry of Tides is outstanding… Studio produced album of outstanding congregational music from one of the most influential teams in the worship genre." - Worship Leader "TIDES is about proclaiming the majesty of God and crying out for His Presence throughout this incredible worship experience. This album is a must-have for your praise and worship collection… one of the best of the year" - NewReleaseTuesday.com
"The innovative thing about recording in the studio, versus live, is not only a more polished sound, but also a more full one. This disc plays with dynamics and is able to make a much more relevant and contemporary worship album…this album is chock full of vocal powerhouses, and is definitely not your typical worship album." - HollywoodJesus.com
"Bethel Music…is wowing the hearts and ears of many around the world…injecting fresh arrangements of songs and new life into an industry that is otherwise a little bit stale… the 60 minute musical masterpiece [TIDES] is a treasure that is to be explored over and over…In fact, the whole record of TIDES is a great success…A brilliant album…A must buy!" - ChristianMusicZine.com
"What is amazing about the Bethel Music team is that their voices beautifully complement each other giving us a richly textured overall sound…TIDES is an album that is so firmly rooted in Christ's victory over the 'sea' that we can help but sing with affirmation…" - Breathecast.com
"With a variety of singers and musicians that deliver their own songs throughout the album, Bethel's new album stands tall as it showcases some of the most prolific and powerful vocals and song-writing skills shown in worship music today…these songs that capture the heart of our desperation for the Lord are great highlights on an album that's certain to be a standout in the history of Bethel Music, and the history of modern music altogether." - IndieVisionMusic.com

Is Your Worship Leading Mere Emotional Manipulation? by David Santistevan

The more you lead worship, the better you get at creating emotional experiences.
You become skilled at choosing songs that flow well together and evoke a certain response from people.
Raised hands, loud shouts, resounding claps, unison voices.
You become less concerned with pleasing the heart of God and more preoccupied with what will garner the greatest response.
But I’m wondering today:
  • Is our corporate worship in danger?
  • Have we become too dependent on songs, sounds, and stages?
  • Is our worship simply psychological manipulation?
  • How can we be sure our worship is pleasing to God?
  • Is a fragrance is rising from the hearts of God’s surrendered, desperate people?
Because I know how to lead worship.
I know how to be a good worship leader with my heart somewhere else.
I know how to organize my songs to have a powerful impact on you. I know what kind of body language to use. I know what worship leader phrases to say that will draw out your shouts and amens.

Is God Pleased with Your Church’s Worship?

In the Bible, God says things like:
  • “Away with the noise of your songs.”
  • “These people honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me.”
  • “But let justice roll like a river and mercy like a never failing stream.”
This isn’t so much a teaching post as much as it is a post asking for your feedback.
What do you think?
How do we keep our worship from psychological manipulation and truly offer the real thing on Sunday morning?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Kim Walker release debut album with Skyler Smith

“HOME is nothing less than refreshing, and lovely… With this creative and authentic endeavor the Smiths have created something special.” – Worship Leader Magazine
Eighteen months in the making, Kim Walker-Smith and Skyler Smith released last July 16 their highly anticipated and first musical collaboration, HOME, a worshipful, modern folk-pop collection from Jesus Culture Music.  Already gathering critical acclaim, the album spent all week on top of the iTunes® “Christian/Gospel” chart while climbing all the way to No. 8 on the iTunes overall “Top Albums” chart. The album also lands this week at No. 1 on the overall Christian/Gospel Current Digital Albums and Worship Album Billboard retail charts.
Produced by Jeremy Edwardson and Jason Borneman, the music of HOME was carved out of Kim and Skyler’s unique love story, the worship life they’ve aspired to as individuals and the ministry they’ve shared as part of Jesus Culture.  HOME explores the intimacy of time alone and together in the presence of God, and that sense of belonging as a universal metaphor for our relationship God pursues with his children.
“Calling this album HOME took on so many meanings as the project progressed,” explains Skyler. “We’ve always traveled so much, we’ve known that ‘home’ would have to be wherever we found ourselves. We didn’t want to force anything, but we wanted to come together as a couple and say something personal and honest about our lives in relationship with each other and in relationship with God.”
“From the beginning of our marriage,” Kim adds, “we’ve been very intentional about blending our lives, taking every opportunity to be 100% completely together, so this album really is a defining moment for us, a creative endeavor that represents who we are as a couple and as worshipers who desire intimacy with our Creator.”

A studio recording where eleven of the twelve tracks were written collaboratively by Skyler and Kim, HOME is a departure from the live, corporate worship experience captured on the Jesus Culture records, on which Kim’s voice is most often associated.  This more intimate offering is already resonating with critics.  Worship Leader Magazine says, “HOME is nothing less than refreshing, and lovely… With this creative and authentic endeavor the Smiths have created something special…worshipers will be led to an outpouring of adoration, as well as receiving the life-changing love that is directed back towards us from the creator of everything.” Breathecast.com adds, “Kim Walker-Smith brings to the palette her bold, intense and dynamic stage-presence of pop worship.  Skyler Smith…brings to the table an Americana rootsy folk vibe.”
Widely known for her passionate and contagious pursuit of God’s Presence in worship, Kim, along with her husband Skyler, lead, teach and impart worship around the world. Named one of the “Emerging Leaders of Tomorrow’s Church” by Charisma magazine (2010), Kim’s rendition of the John Mark McMillan song, “How He Loves,” has been viewed over 9.5 million times on YouTube, while her version of Brian Johnson’s “Where You Go I Go” has over four million views.
